Supply Chain Managers Need New Set of Skills

A recent article in the WSJ made a case that the skills needed for Procurement have significantly changed. Due to the transformation of procurement, buyers now need the ability to:

  • Manage Technology
    • managers must understand that technology and be able to implement it effectively
  • Find Suppliers Globally
    • supply-chain managers must be able to source materials, components and services on a global basis
    • managers must develop deep "market intelligence" about global suppliers, factors that drive cost and supply-and-demand dynamics -- and they must be able to communicate all that to key stakeholders in the company
  • Have a "Big Picture" View
    • just call this strategic sourcing
  • Build Teams - Externally and Internally
    • teams are becoming a favored method of dealing with the heavier workload, as employees from different parts of a company are brought together to handle a task, and then sent back to their respective departments

This is a great article! I think the most important piece is the external team building. The most successful procurement professionals are the one's who understand programs that the vendor has around their standards. I have seen reseller take advantage of clients because they were not up to speed.
