Supply Chain Managers Need New Set of Skills
Monday, March 10, 2008 at 08:37PM A recent article in the WSJ made a case that the skills needed for Procurement have significantly changed. Due to the transformation of procurement, buyers now need the ability to:
- Manage Technology
- managers must understand that technology and be able to implement it effectively
- Find Suppliers Globally
- supply-chain managers must be able to source materials, components and services on a global basis
- managers must develop deep "market intelligence" about global suppliers, factors that drive cost and supply-and-demand dynamics -- and they must be able to communicate all that to key stakeholders in the company
- Have a "Big Picture" View
- just call this strategic sourcing
- Build Teams - Externally and Internally
- teams are becoming a favored method of dealing with the heavier workload, as employees from different parts of a company are brought together to handle a task, and then sent back to their respective departments
